Gavin heard Will’s car pull in, and his heart pounded as he waited for him to walk up the stairs to their second-floor apartment. His stomach was in knots. He didn’t know how his heart would respond when he actually saw him.

He’d spent the last half hour coaching himself about using the correct pronouns and name, and reframing his brain to think of his partner of three years as a man. It was not an easy task. Every time he came around to thinking of sex with him, the resounding message in his brain was “But I’m not gay!”

He was surprised to hear a knock at the door. He opened it, brows furrowed. “Why are you knocking?”

The tall, lanky figure pursed his lips as he stepped across the threshold, eyes darting around the living room. “I don’t know. I don’t know if this feels like home anymore.”

That statement was a sharp stab pinging in Gavin’s chest. “Come on. Let’s sit in the living room and talk, okay?”

Will nodded and followed Gavin to the sofa, where he took one end of it, bringing his one knee up on the cushion like a shield in front of his body. He wrapped his arms around his shin, holding tight, clearly uncomfortable.

Seeing him so vulnerable was another gut punch. Will had always been brash, confident, forward, assertive. Gavin knew this defensive posture was because he’d hurt Will, and it made his heart ache. He sat down next to him and stretched out his hand. “May I hold your hand?”

Will seemed surprised, biting his lower lip as he nodded. His hand felt small and cold in Gavin’s as he squeezed it tight.

“First off, again, I’m sorry I made you feel like you couldn’t be yourself around me,” Gavin began, drawing Will’s moss-green gaze to his. He hoped Will could see the sincerity there. “I just…I wasn’t expecting this at all, and, honestly, I wasn’t even aware I’d said things that would hurt you. Like, I literally had no idea this was where your mind and heart were all this time.”

“Since I was very young,” Will confessed. “And…I just…I’m tired of not living the way I want to. I’m tired of trying to meet others’ expectations for me while I deny who I really am.”

That was more like the Will he knew. He’d perfectly explained why he was moving forward with this decision.

Gavin squeezed his hand. “Okay. Well, we need to figure out how to move forward, then.”

“So, that’s it? You want to stay with me? Me and Abigail?” Will’s eyebrow arched as his gaze drilled into Gavin’s.

Gavin reached up, pulled the ponytail holder from his man bun, and let his ginger-brown tresses fall to his shoulders. Playing with his hair when he was thinking deeply was something he’d learned from Abigail. “Look, I need to tell you what’s going on with me first.”

Will let go of his hand and straightened his spine. “What do you mean?”

“I’m going to Seattle in August,” Gavin announced, trying to keep his lips from curling into a proud smile, but he was proud.
